How HTML5 Banners are Different Than Regular Websites

Many web developers assume that if they can build a website, they can build a banner. Technically, they can—but they often fail to meet the rigorous constraints of the ad-serving environment.

The Weight Limit Challenge

A website can afford to be several megabytes. A banner? Usually, you're capped at 150KB to 200KB for the initial load. Every byte counts. This means optimizing SVG paths, using specialized compression for images, and loading only the bare minimum of JavaScript.

The "Looping" Logic

Most ad exchanges require that banners stop animating after 15 seconds. This requires careful timing and a "frame-based" approach to development that most web developers aren't used to.

Click-Through Tracking

In a website, a link is just a link. In a banner, you have to use a clickTag variable provided by the ad network. Forgetting this means your ad might look great, but it will never record a single click.
